The initial research on sterols and sterolins began in the 1930's in Germany, but was largely forgotten or ignored for a number of years. In 1981 Dr. David Kritchevsky, professor at the Wistar Institute, a medical research facility in Philadelphia, along with a colleague, O.J. Pollack, published the first book on the subject of plant sterols. The thrust of the book was to prove that plant sterols do block cholesterol absorption and tend to lower blood serum cholesterol levels in humans. Researchers in other countries began investigating sterols/sterolins in earnest in the late 1960's and continue today, conducting clinical trials on thousands of humans.

The research eventually reached far beyond the original investigation of lowering cholesterol levels, and branched out to other diseases such as tumors in the colon, tuberculosis, some cancers, coronary disease, and halting deterioration of CD4 T-cells in HIV & AIDS. There were numerous clinical studies conducted by various physicians in several countries, with over 100 studies having been published, proving that phytosterols benefit the immune system.
